Daniel Kasen, an astrophysicist in Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division and UC Berkeley’s Physics Department, is featured in this new Scientific American article about new projects currently under way on the ‘Frontier’ exascale computer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Kasen leads ExaStar, a project that will investigate how supernovae and stellar explosions generate heavy elements. ‘Frontier,’ along with other incoming examachines – such as ‘El Capitan’ at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and ‘Aurora’ at Argonne National Laboratory – are used to generate computer simulations and detailed three-dimensional models that enable researchers to explore a variety of scientific challenges in entirely new ways.
