This new article features Jean-Luc Vay, a senior physicist in the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division (ATAP), and how Berkeley Lab’s LDRD (Laboratory Directed Research & Development) program has supported his team’s development of WarpX, a cutting-edge software platform developed under Vay’s leadership within DOE’s Exascale Computing Project (ECP) for the modeling of plasma accelerators. Today, the modeling of complex accelerator systems based on first principles is within arm’s reach of the scientific community, and Vay’s team is ideally positioned to further develop the technology to the level where it can be considered for designs of future particle colliders to explore the basic structure of the universe.
