The KATRIN beamline. Tritium gas is continuously injected into the source, where it decays, producing β-electrons. (Inset) The source volume, filled with a plasma of low-energy electrons and tritiated ions. The tritium gas is pumped out, purified, and recirculated, whereas the electrons are guided magnetically through the transport section into the spectrometer. Only electrons with sufficient energy to overcome the electrostatic potential in the analyzing plane are counted at the detector. The analyzing plane is shifted toward the detector for background reduction.
