Pioneering nuclear chemist Darleane Hoffman has died at age 98. A dedicated mentor and a trailblazer for women in science, Hoffman’s groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized our understanding of the heaviest elements. She joined Berkeley Lab in 1984, became one of Glenn Seaborg’s most celebrated colleagues, and was involved in the discovery of new superheavy elements, including 114 and 116.
