On January 21-22, 2026, Berkeley Lab hosted a workshop on Agentic AI for User Facilities. Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) – computationally-driven research systems that autonomously sense, decide, and act – are rapidly transforming operations at user facilities across the DOE complex. Organized by ATAP Division research scientist Thorsten Hellert in collaboration with colleagues from Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source, Molecular Foundry, Joint Genome Institute, and NERSC, the event convened experts from light and neutron sources, nanoscience centers, and computing facilities across the US and Europe to explore the design, deployment, and impact of agentic AI in scientific environments.
