The scientific and research apparatus designed and fabricated by the Engineering Division includes next-generation accelerators, advanced detectors, complex data acquisition systems, novel lasers, uniquely powerful and specialized magnets, and advanced optical instrumentation. Solutions and approaches developed for one application are routinely leveraged, adapted, and tailored to new applications and challenging scientific research opportunities.
The Division’s expertise encompasses a broad range of unique, multi-disciplinary engineering and instrumentation solutions that include the innovative design and development of semiconductor detectors, custom integrated circuit design, mechanical systems, composite technology, and complex fabrications. The infrastructure and expertise the Division provides assure that the instruments and technologies developed provide breakthrough solutions to critical scientific problems of global impact.
This disciplined integration and systems approach is currently assisting Berkeley Lab’s contribution to the Linac Coherent Light Source-II upgrade, where the Division is responsible for the injector, undulator, and low level radio-frequency systems. The disciplined integrated systems approach underpins the pre-conceptual development of the Advanced Light Source’s diffraction limited upgrade.
