Daniel Carney, a staff scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division, is featured in this new Physics Today article about targeted small-scale “tabletop” experiments to search for physics beyond the standard model. The article describes the advances in precision measurement techniques that have enabled smaller scale experiments to explore physics beyond the standard model, including quantum gravity, dark matter and new forces. The article quotes Carney, who started working on tabletop searches for new physics when he “got obsessed with the idea of testing quantum gravity. Tabletop searches are the Wild West. You pick what you want to look for and then design the experiment accordingly. The space of possible experiments is vast and unexplored.”
